Beginner-Friendly Hiking Trails in Pretoria

If you’ve ever found yourself Googling “hiking trails near me” without much luck, this blog post is for you! We’ve compiled a list of the best hiking trails in Pretoria that are suitable for beginners.

Wolwespruit (🗺️)

Wolwespruit, a trail park in Erasmuskloof, has three loop trail options on site. The trails are 4.5km, 6.5km, and 10km long. The 4.5km Orange Trail is the most beginner-friendly as it is relatively flat with a few rocky sections.

The scenery on the trail includes streams and shaded bush areas. The two restaurants on the premises, PLTFRM Restaurant and Create Wolwespruit, are perfect for post-hike meals or drinks.

Wolwespruit is open 365 days of the year, welcomes pets, and offers day passes and annual memberships.

Hedianga Farm (🗺️)

Situated on a particularly rocky part of the Bronberg side of the Magaliesberg mountain, Hedianga Farm is a bit more challenging than most hiking trails in Pretoria that are marked as “beginner”. However, it is possible to hike with little experience. Hedianga has three trail options that are 5km, 10km, and 15km respectively.

The farm is a great spot for watching sunsets in the late afternoons and escaping from the city noise in quiet nature. A coffee van is available on the farm on weekends from 7:30 to 12:30.

The trails are open throughout the week, are pet-friendly, and offer weekly and monthly access tickets.

Faerie Glen Nature Reserve (🗺️)

Faerie Glen Nature Reserve, a government-run reserve, is located off of January Masilela Drive in Faerie Glen. It is one of the most affordable hikes in Pretoria at only R21 to enter. The easiest trail on site is the Hadeda Trail (2.3km), but the reserve is home to two more trails – the Acacia Trail (3.2km) and Kiepersol Trail (4.2km).

Bird-watching lookouts and informal picnic spots make for a relaxing experience, and leashed dogs are allowed as long as they have permits.

Hikers can purchase single-day entrance tickets or season tickets that are valid for one year from the date of purchase.

Hennops Hiking Trail (🗺️)

Hennops is a highly popular location for hiking and mountain biking in Pretoria. Of the three trails to hike, the Dassie (2km) and Zebra (5km) trails are suitable for beginners. Both trails have multiple points of interest along the way, including a cable car/suspension bridge to cross.

Hikers receive maps and orientation before heading out. This trail does not allow pets and while children are welcome, baby strollers are not permitted due to rough terrain.

A food and coffee bar is open on public holidays and weekdays until 15:00.
